As light of dawn makes darkness yield,
So Christ has conquered death and sin,
To Christ the risen Saviour, then,
To Christ the daystar let us come.

The Son whom God the Father sent,
Who dwells for ever God and man,
Shall be this day our truth, our way,
Our resurrection and our life.

May God the Spirit lead us on
In peace, in love, in holy joy,
Restoring in a world redeemed
The image of divinity.

The Father, all transcending, near,
The fount of Godhead may we know,
His sons, his servants living now,
Within the pascha of the Lord.

To God the Father, Spirit, Son,
One undivided blessed three,
Let glory, honour, worship, praise
From man and all creation rise.
Amen.

Psalm 118
Give thanks to God, for he is good,
his love endures in eternity.
All of Israel must proclaim:
his love endures in eternity -
and all the priests in the house of God:
his love endures in eternity -
all who put their faith in our God -
his love endures in eternity.

I was imprisoned, I called:
"God" - and he gave me an answer,
he gave great freedom to me.

He stands up for me, I am safe,
who will be able to touch me?
He stands up for me like a friend,
and my enemies count for nothing.

Better to shelter with God
than to rely on people;
better to shelter with God
than to rely on power.

All nations surrounded me,
I beat them down with the name of God.
They closed in on me from every side
I beat them down with the name of God.
They set upon me like a swarm of wasps,
a buzzing straw-fire round about me,
I beat them down with the name of God.

I was beaten, I had fallen,
God has helped me to my feet.
He is my pride, he is my song,
my God has become my victory.

Shouts of gladness and triumph are
ringing out from the tents of the righteous:
"The powerful hand of the Lord does wonders,
raised up high, ready to bless us,
the powerful hand of the Lord does wonders."

I shall not die, no, I shall live,
bear witness to his powerful works -
it is true, the Lord has beaten me hard,
but he did not give me up to death.

Open to me
the door of his house,
I want to enter,
I want to thank him.

This door opens
the way to God;
men of goodwill
may go inside.

I give you thanks, for you have heard me,
you have become my victory.
The stone the builders could not use
has become the cornerstone.
This way God has let it happen -
we see but fail to understand.
This is the day which the Lord has made,
a day of gladness for all of us.
Come and save us, you, our God,
bring us to a happy end.

You are blessed if you come in the name of the Lord.
From his house we wish you blessing.
His light has risen over us.
Form a festive procession, then,
and come close around the altar,
wave palm branches and sing to him:

You are my God, I want to thank you,
my God, and praise you to the skies.
Give thanks to God, for he is good,
his love endures in eternity.

Psalm 117

Praise the Lord all nations, * extol him all peoples.
For great is his steadfast love toward us, * and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.
Praise the Lord.
Glory to Father and Son and Holy Spirit, * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen.

Psalm 95       First Week

O come let us sing to the Lord,
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving,
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
for his hands formed the dry land.
O come, let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would hearken to his voice!
Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers tested me and put me to the proof,
though they had seen my work.
For forty years I loathed that generation and said,
"They are a people who err in heart
and they do not regard my ways."
Therefore I swore in my anger
that they should not enter my rest.

Psalm 5

Give ear to my words O Lord,
give heed to my groaning.
Hearken to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God, for to you do I pray.
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice,
in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness,
evil may not sojourn with you.
The boastful may not stand before your eyes,
you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men.
But I through the abundance of your steadfast love
will enter your house,
I will worship toward your holy temple in the fear of you.
Lead me O Lord in your righteousness because of my enemies, make your way straight before me.
For there is no truth in their mouth,
their heart is destruction,
their throat is an open sepulchre,
they flatter with their tongue.
Make them bear their guilt O God,
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice,
let them ever sing for joy;
and defend them, that those who love your name
may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover him with favour as with a shield.

Psalm 16       Second Week

Preserve me O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, "You are my Lord,
I have no good apart from you."
As for the saints in the land,
they are the noble in whom is all my delight.
Those who choose another god
multiply their sorrows,
their libations of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup,
you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places,
yes, I have a goodly heritage.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the Lord always before me,
because he is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body also dwells secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol
or let your godly one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy,
in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels,
praise him, all his host!

Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord!
For he commanded and they were created.
And he established them for ever and ever,
he fixed their bounds which cannot be passed.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea monsters and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and frost,
stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars!
Beasts and all cattle,
creeping things and flying birds!

Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted,
his glory is above earth and heaven.
He has raised up a horn for his people,
praise for all his saints,
for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 96        First Week

O sing to the Lord a new song,
sing to the Lord all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name,
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvellous works among all the peoples!
For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Honour and majesty are before him,
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name,
bring an offering and come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in holy array,
tremble before him all the earth!

Say among the nations, "The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established, it shall never be moved,
he will judge the peoples with equity."
Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar and all that fills it,
let the field exult and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with his truth.

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
When evildoers assail me,
uttering slanders against me, my adversaries and foes,
they shall stumble and fall.
Though a host encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.

One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord,
and to inquire in his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent,
he will set me high upon a rock.
And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies round about me;
and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

Psalm 19       Second Week

The heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
yet their voice goes out through all the earth
and their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens
and its circuit to the end of them;
and there is nothing hid from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is your servant warned,
in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern his errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 149

Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful!
Let Israel be glad in his Maker,
let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing,
making melody to him with timbrel and lyre!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people,
he adorns the humble with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory,
let them sing for joy on their couches.
Let the high praises of God be in their throats
and two-edged swords in their hands.
To wreak vengeance on the nations
and chastisement on the peoples,
to bind their kings with chains
and their nobles with fetters of iron,
to execute on them the judgement written!
This is glory for all his faithful ones.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 97        First Week

The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice,
let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are round about him,
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries round about.
His lightnings lighten the world,
the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens proclaim his righteousness
and all the peoples behold his glory.
All worshippers of images are put to shame
who make their boast in worthless idols;
all gods bow down before him.
Zion hears and is glad
and the daughters of Judah rejoice
because of your judgements, O God.
For you O Lord, are most high over all the earth,
you are exalted far above all gods.

The Lord loves those who hate evil;
he preserves the lives of his saints,
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light dawns for the righteous
and joy for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous
and give thanks to his holy name!

Psalm 34

I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord,
let the afflicted hear and be glad.
O magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
I sought the Lord and he answered me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him and be radiant;
so your faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried,
and the Lord heard him,
and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him and delivers them.
O taste and see that the Lord is good!
Happy is the man who takes refuge in him!
O fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no want!
The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Come O sons, listen to me,
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
What man is there who desires life
and covets many days, that he may enjoy good?
Keep your tongue from evil,
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil and do good,
seek peace and pursue it.

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against evil-doers,
to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help,
the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the broken-hearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous;
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
He keeps all his bones, not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked;
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants,
none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Psalm 24       Second Week

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein;
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false,
and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the Lord,
and vindication from the God of his salvation.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is the King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!

Psalm 98        First Week

O sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvellous things!
His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
The Lord has made known his victory,
he has revealed his vindication
in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love
and faithfulness to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth
have seen the victory of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!
Let the sea roar and all that fills it,
the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing for joy together before the Lord,
for he comes to rule the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 40

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after false gods!
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
they would be more than can be numbered.

Sacrifice and offering you do not desire,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
Then I said, "Lo, I come;
in the roll of the book it is written of me;
I delight to do your will O my God;
your law is within my heart."

I have told the glad news of deliverance
in the great congregation,
lo, I have not restrained my lips, as you know O Lord.
I have not hid your saving help within my heart,
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love
and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

Do not O Lord, withhold your mercy from me,
let your steadfast love and your faithfulness ever preserve me!
For evils have encompassed me without number;
my iniquities have overtaken me till I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head;
my heart fails me.
Be pleased O Lord to deliver me!
O Lord make haste to help me!
Let them be put to shame and confusion altogether
who seek to snatch away my life;
let them be turned back and brought to dishonour
who desire my hurt!
Let them be appalled because of their shame
who say to me, "Aha, Aha!"
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation say continually,
"Great is the Lord!"
As for me, I am poor and needy;
but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer,
do not tarry O my God!

Psalm 29        Second Week

Ascribe to the Lord O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy array.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters,
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord upon many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful,
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars,
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness,
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the oaks to whirl
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood,
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Psalm 99       First Week

The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim;
let the earth quake!
The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
Let them praise your great and terrible name!
Holy is he!
Mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Extol the Lord our God;
worship at his footstool!
Holy is he!

Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
They cried to the Lord and he answered them.
He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
they kept his testimonies and the statutes that he gave them.

O Lord our God, you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Extol the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
for the Lord our God is holy!

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear
though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the most High.
God is in the midst of her,
she shall not be moved;
God will help her right early.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Come behold the works of the Lord,
how he has wrought desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the chariots with fire!

"Be still and know that I am God.
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth!"
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Psalm 42 & 43       Second Week

As a hart longs for flowing streams,
so longs my soul for you O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and behold the face of God?
My tears have been my food day and night,
while men say to me continually, "Where is your God?"

These things I remember as I pour out my soul:
how I went with the throng,
and led them in procession to the house of God,
with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,
a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

My soul is cast down within me,
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your cataracts;
all your waves and your billows have gone over me.
By day the Lord commands his steadfast love
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, my rock:"Why have you forgotten me?
Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?"
As with a deadly wound in my body,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me continually,
"Where is your God?"

Why are you cast down O my soul
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

Vindicate me O God,
and defend my cause against an ungodly people;
from deceitful and unjust men deliver me!
For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you cast me off?
Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me,
let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy;
and I will praise you with the lyre O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

Psalm 100       First Week

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord is God!
It is he that made us and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him, bless his name!

For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the Lord, the Most High, is terrible,
a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the king of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!

God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted!

Psalm 63       Second Week

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you,
as in a dry and weary land where no water is.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live,
I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

My soul is feasted as with marrow and fat
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips,
when I think of you upon my bed
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
My soul clings to you,
your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth,
they shall be given over to the power of the sword,
they shall be prey for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God,
all who swear by him shall glory,
for the mouths of liars will be stopped.
